NCSA is teaming with Carle Foundation, Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD), the Center for One Health Illinois, and many other community partners to develop INDICATOR, an advanced information system for infectious disease surveillance, modeling, and response. Ultimately, the goal of this project is to provide an open source platform for managing the data and information necessary for the early detection of and response to an infectious disease outbreak. Additionally, the project will provide a rich source of information on the health of a population that can be mined by other researchers. The system currently receives information on emergency department and convenient care visits, patient advisory nurse calls, school attendance, reportable diseases, weather, and animal control. INDICATOR has provided daily analysis of community health to CUPHD since 2008, and during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, they successfully changed their vaccination strategy as a result of INDICATOR’s reports.
